81 | 6/8/2025 | Dept. Q | Really great detective show with fun cast of characters and a pretty intricate case. I felt like I could tell right away that the show was based off a book based on how complex the story was. At times it felt like it was getting a bit too complicated (too many new players / suspects being introduced all the time) but we thoroughly enjoyed it the whole way through, and the ending was quite satisfying. Excited for season 2! | 9.0 | Show |
80 | 5/15/2025 | This Is Us | Started off absolutely loving this show, super heartfelt moments and great writing and flawed but likable and realistic characters. After watching for a while though it was getting a little heavy for us and didn't quite have that "bingeworthy" factor so it kind of fell off - but we will probably get back to this again in the future! | 9.0 | Show |
79 | 5/11/2025 | The Last Kingdom | We only got through like 7 episodes, seemed promising at first but it just got worse and worse. The characters all seemed so unlikable and one-dimensional, also way too strong just butchering through countless people without any prior training or experience. Lots of questionable decisions that just made the characters (especially Uhtred) really unlikeable. We liked Leofric and Alfred though. | 4.0 | Show |
78 | 5/1/2025 | Bullet Train Explosion | Watched it because it was being promoted on Netflix, but man oh man was it sooo bad. The acting was horrible, the characters all seemed so unrealistic and just like caricatures essentially. Couldn't even get through all the way to the end. | 4.0 | Movie |
77 | 4/27/2025 | Midnight Run | A very fun watch about a bails bondsman trying to hunt down an accountant who stole from a powerful mob boss - lots of action and funny moments with lots of competing parties trying to also nab the accountant. Definitely a great lighthearted movie to watch with a protagonist with some character flaws and character development (which is sorely missed these days!) | 9.0 | Movie |
76 | 3/25/2025 | Adolescence | Amazing watch especially from a cinematographic and acting perspective (1 hour single take episodes!). Honestly great telling of a story that keeps you at the edge of your seat. Some slow moments given the nature of how they recorded everything in one take, but I was left absolutely impressed the entire way through! | 9.5 | Show |
75 | Man on the Inside | Cute lighthearted show about an older man infiltrating a nursing home to play the role of a detective. Had some cute relationships and overall was a nice watch with a nice overall message of making the most of your relationships and time. | 8.0 | Show
74 | Oppenheimer | I remember really enjoying this movie, was complex to watch as most Chris Nolan movies are (with the time switching especially) but as it came together it really coalesced into a pretty epic film. | 9.0 | Movie
73 | Barbie | Felt very cringe to me, I was surprised that it had gotten such a great reception. Didn't think the storywriting or characters were well written at all. | 6.0 | Movie
72 | Dune Part 2 | Feels like they dropped the ball a little on this one in my opinion. The villains became so stupid and some of them literally got beaten without even putting up a fight. Was kind of annoying to me to see them scheming so well in the first movie and then become suddenly so dumb and weak in the second movie. Probably rated it lower because I came in with such high expectations! | 6.5 | Movie
71 | Dune Part 1 | Amazing worldbuilding, loved all the tension between the different factions and also that the villains are intelligent. So much cool political scheming. Was a bit slow but was overall a great set up for the next movie. | 9.0 | Movie
70 | The Last Of Us | Man I could barely watch this. Felt like they were trying way too hard at points, yet there was barely any dialogue or chemistry between the main characters. The pacing was slow and there didn't feel like there was any sense of urgency even in a post-apocalyptic zombie world. I actually watched some of the game playthroughs and cutscenes and it felt like in the game the world building and pacing was much better and engaging. Felt like the game did a much better job of making you care for certain characters, and did a much better sense of making you feel betrayed when they turned on you, etc. In the show you barely got to know them over the course of an episode so you didn't really feel anything when something happened to them. | 5.0 | Show
69 | Haikyuu! | Volleyball, so it goes without speaking that's a huge plus for me already :P Great storyline and character development, just such a fun and feel good watch. Still need to finish the whole thing though (watched it back in medical school) | 9.5 | Show
68 | Lincoln Lawyer | My favorite was season 1. So addictive. Season 2 and 3 was also great, though 3 got a little loose on their writing it seems. Hopefully it picks back up in the next season! | 8.0 | Show
67 | Zero Day | Fun watch, definitely got a little convoluted with lots of plot holes in the middle, but last couple episodes were actually pretty strong. Overall was not the best though. | 6.5 | Show
66 | Crash Landing On You | First episode or two was a little rough/cringey, but then it got so so good after that. I remember watching this vividly in 4th year of medical school and binging it so fast! | 9.2 | Show
65 | Saving Private Ryan | 8.5 | Movie
64 | Elemental | 9.5 | Movie | ||
63 | Dungeons and Dragons | Amazing and fun hero’s journey with great character development, action sequences, all in all so funny and creative! | 9.5 | Movie
62 | Are you there God, it's me Margaret | Pretty good coming of age story, some poignant moments - in the end it kind of felt like it just self resolved on its own which I guess is kind of the point. | 7.5 | Movie
61 | Past Lives | A worse version of La La Land. Not sure why it got so much appraise. It was slow, boring, and I didn't like the characters at all. | 4.0 | Movie
60 | Journey To The West | Great, funny, nice action. Does fall off a little bit in the middle to end | 8.5 | Movie
59 | Our Times | Very cute lighthearted high school romance movie, very similar to Apple Of My Eye - starts off a bit cringey but it keeps getting better as it goes on | 7.5 | Movie
58 | Red Cliff | Lots of famous actors and nice to go through some Three Kingdoms history but it's not very accurate and the dialogue and character development is sorely lacking so it kind of just becomes a lot of action sequences and gets a little boring | 5.0 | Movie
57 | BlackBerry | Nice to learn some of the history, but the characters did seem a little one dimensional to me and I got bored at times. | 6.5 | Movie
56 | Shang Chi | Bad story, bad acting, bad character development. Some good action scenes I guess. | 4.0 | Movie
55 | Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 | Might have been because the audio wasn’t super good at our house but I didn’t really enjoy this one too much. Story was a little complicated. Knowing the behind the scenes stunts is nice though | 6.5
54 | Top Gun: Maverick | Super solid movie, great storyline overall and satisfying to watch. | 9.0 | Movie
53 | Everything Everywhere All At Once | For me a 10/10, though I can tell this is not for everyone. The hot dog scene and some stuff is a bit too much - but that is kind of the perfect metaphor for the internet and how overwhelming and crazy it is. Such a great exploration about the internet and its downsides of being "everything everywhere all at once", Asian American family dynamics, and what true masculinity in Asian men can look like. | 10.0 | Movie
52 | In The Heights | I remember really liking this, cried during the grandma scene. | 9.0 | Movie
51 | Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse | 10.0 | Movie
50 | Spider-Man: No Way Home | 9.5 | Movie
49 | Spider-Man: Far From Home | I think I remember liking this one more than the first? | 9.0 | Movie
48 | Inside Out | Still amazing. Cried and felt emotional a lot. Great message. | 10.0 | Movie
47 | Joker | So dark. Such a great character development arc. They bring so many parts from earlier in the movie back in later. Everything develops so great and so naturally. Loved it! | 10.0 | Movie
46 | The Usual Suspects | Watched with Katherine, happy we got to watch it together to see a classic movie. McManus is so cool. Twist at the end was kind of expected tbh but maybe because we know Kevin Spacey. Story was fun to watch but not the most well-written probably, lots of details just get glossed over. | 9.0 | Movie
45 | Ironman | Just interesting to see first Marvel movie. Was a lot more serious back then. Felt like they hadn't really hit their stride but overall you could see how promising it was. Weird how he escaped from the big bad Iron Man from the explosion - they didn't really explain that? | 7.5 | Movie
44 | Free Solo | Very inspirational watch. Got addicted to watching some climbing videos on Youtube afterwards! | 9.0 | Movie
43 | Knives Out | Funny, well-written, and intriguing. Tbh when I look at this one compared to my other 10/10 movies though this one definitely falls short so may have to adjust the score if I ever re-watch it. | 10.0 | Movie
42 | Parasite | Artful, symbolic, dramatic. | 9.5 | Movie
41 | Shrek | 9.0 | Movie | ||
40 | Jumanji 2 | 6.0 | Movie | ||
39 | Shahzam! | 3.0 | Movie | ||
38 | Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle | Fun for family to watch, though very simplistic and the humor is not too creative. | 8.0 | Movie
37 | The Greatest Showman | Story dumbed down by too much music, and the music did not feel like it fit (too teen-pop and it seemed forced) | 6.0 | Movie
36 | Die Hard | Fun action movie to watch for Christmas - watched at Lake Tahoe with Katherine / Tom + Jenna. | 8.5 | Movie
35 | Coco | Music was amazing, story + culture too. Definitely worth rewatching! 10.0 initially, 9.0 on rewatch: maybe because the movie didn't come through as much on the airplane. Story felt more slow and forced compared to Inside Out) | 9.0 | Movie
34 | Dunkirk | Interesting concept of examining a point of war from multiple different perspectives all at once - although it was slow, with little dialogue / character development (I guess that was the point?) and I didn't enjoy it too much. | 7.0 | Movie
33 | Hidden Figures | Awesome movie. Great story and really helped reflect the difficulties of race / being out of place. Very inspiring as well. | 9.0 | Movie
32 | Thor: Ragnarok | Extremely fun to watch. | 9.0 | Movie
31 | Spider-Man: Homecoming | Boring, story didn't make much sense, I didn't enjoy it too much overall. | 5.5 | Movie
30 | The Big Sick | Funny, comedic, and described immigrant and second generation lifestyle very nicely. | 9.0
29 | Beauty and the Beast | I don't remember the details too well, but I felt the beast was a little too handsome and some plotlines were rushed. Otherwise I liked some of the things they added - such as one of the characters being gay. They also fleshed out / developed some of the side characters more than what I remember from the musical I watched with Katherine. Music was pretty nice and Emma Watson did a good job. | 9.0 | Movie
28 | August: Osage County | Interesting movie with lots of famous actors including Meryl Streep, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Ewan McGregor. It was about a dysfunctional family in Oklahoma. It was really interesting to see how things played out and how crazy everything was, and I felt like I could relate a little to the characters' relationship to their mom (Meryl Streep) who could be difficult to handle and very stubborn at times. Enjoyed watching this with Katherine. The acting was superb!! The only thing was I didn't really like the ending, there seemed to not be enough heartwarming stuff after so much negativity but I guess that was the point of the movie - showing how monsters aren't born as bad people, but rather made that way. | 7.5 | Movie
27 | Gone Girl | Watched this for the second time (Katherine's first time) during our honeymoon in Key West. I was happy that Katherine enjoyed it because she likes these kinds of thriller mystery crime genre type of stuff. Just as good as before, and I remembered it pretty clearly because of how much I liked it when I saw it a few years ago. Very creepy for guys though! My favorite thing about this movie is how it portrays exactly how media can skew stories, alter public opinion, and totally sensationalize things that aren't true at all. Really a perfect movie for demonstrating the power of media and how it can do terrible things. | 8.5 | Movie
26 | Get Out | Awesome thriller movie that we watched during our honeymoon. Lots of racial themes explored, and metaphors I think that could be unpacked like when the couple hits the deer before getting to the house. Reminded me a lot of The Stepford Wives. The ending left a little to be desired, he kind of just kills everyone and leaves. I think they could have found a different and better, more meaningful way to end the movie. | 8.5 | Movie
25 | Wonder Woman | Fun movie with great pro-woman themes. The acting was pretty good. I thought it got a little convoluted towards the end when she actually faces Ares the god of war and it is revealed that she is a god also. I think it would have developed her character further if she had to come to face the fact that the stories she grew up with might not have been true at all, and that she would have to accept the world as being different than she thought. | 7.5 | Movie
24 | Guardians of the Galaxy 2 | Really love the development of the father-son relationship between Starkiller (forgot his regular name) and Yondu in this movie. It was overall a fun movie to watch. | 8.5 | Movie
23 | Logan | A few too many references to previous X-men movie that I didn’t watch, so it wasn't as good as it probably would have been otherwise. Was still fun to watch with my mom, Katherine and Jing lol, the ticket person was like "out of all the movies you guys would be watching I did not expect it to be this one" haha! | 6.5 | Movie
22 | La La Land | Amazingly beautiful movie. Music was great. The plot was great. The characters were great. I really want to watch this again and look more for symbolism and look at how the camera was used, how things were framed, etc. I think there's a lot more to the movie than I got to see on the first viewing. Watched it with Katherine, Jonathan, Nick, Josh, and Seungha at Rave Cinema! Only thing that might have been better was probably the beginning (was a little slow to start and perhaps a little confusing at first), but the film continually built on itself and kept developing until it became absolutely amazing. | 10.0 | Movie
21 | Kubo and the Two Strings | Watched this movie at home with mom over winter break and we invited a lot of family friends, Jenna and her mom, Burt and his parents, and Nancy's parents. The movie was nice, visually it was stunning with its stop motion animation, and the meaning that they tried to put into the story was pretty nice. It was about humans having a life worth living for despite all the bad stuff like death and suffering, compared to the life of immortals. The plot wasn't the best though, they did develop the character's a bit but it seemed a bit forced and cut short. Still, overall the movie was enjoyable, I probably just didn't enjoy it quite as much because I had higher expectations going into it from the high Rotten Tomatoes reviews. | 7.5 | Movie
20 | Sully | Slow movie, but watched it with Jing and mom over winter break 2016 and it was still nice to watch overall. Learned a lot about the Hudson river plane landing and how the investigation almost regarded it possible for Captain Sully to land at LaGuardia or Teterboro. My favorite parts were the guy who tried to swim to shore but then thought against it and decided to swim back towards the plane, and also when the first pilot (Jeff?) was listening to the CVR tapes and reliving the scene. He was scared for his life on the plane re-enactment, and then it cut to his face with closed eyes and him reliving the moment and it was pretty funny. | 7.5 | Movie
19 | Moana | A fun Disney movie. Somehow watching it you know that it just won't become a classic. However I enjoyed watching it, especially it was with mom and Linda and they both liked it a lot. I liked the music the most (I've started to realize I really like music and musical type stuff after watching Beauty and the Beast with Katherine in Lancaster). Overall a nice, fun movie for all. Hoping to get mom into watching movies with some of her friends since she seems to enjoy it and it's a good way for her to socialize and keep up with friends. | 8.5 | Movie
18 | Rogue One | I liked the Asian representation in the characters and they were pretty cool. Most of the characters weren't very well developed though. I guess that's expected though because they weren't going to be in any continued storyline, but still I think they could have done a bit better character development. I liked how all the characters played an important role in the end. The robot was a funny character. I liked how it was good backstory to the 4th Star Wars movie. Overall seemed just like a nice action movie to me, not too deep or awesome or anything. I did get very emotional during the scene with the main character and her father though. Wasn't a particularly special scene but I was really moved by the "I have so many things to tell you" that the dad said to the main character. Watched with Jefferson peeps. | 7.5 | Movie
17 | Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them | Writing this a little while after I watched the movie, but from what I remember it was pretty funny and nice to watch. The plot wasn't exactly the best and I felt like it fell off towards the end (seemed rushed), but it was a nice little movie set in the wizarding Harry Potter universe. Watched with Katherine and Lisenia. | 7.5 | Movie
16 | Hell or High Water | A really awesome movie and definitely worth another watch. The characters were complex and the plot was complex and it had great commentary on racial divides and the negative effects of banking on our society. It was perhaps a little slow in the very beginning, but it continued building up throughout the entire movie and felt very intense towards the end. I enjoyed it a lot! Watched with Katherine and her family and my mom. | 9.5 | Movie
15 | Ghostbusters | Maybe my impression of the movie was better because I went into it thinking that it wouldn't be that good, but the first 30 minutes or so had me laughing constantly and put me in a very good mood! The plot was a little shallow and I wasn't too satisfied with how easy it was for them to win the last battle (they also didn't seem to have a plan really at all), but the jokes were really great and the comedy was very on point! Watched with Katherine on the plane to Atlanta for Thanksgiving. | 9.0 | Movie
14 | Dr. Strange | Funny jokes like the one about wifi passwords in the temple. I liked Benedict Cumberbatch in his role as Dr. Strange. It has made me more intrigued to watch other stuff of his, so I started the TV series Sherlock as well. Pretty typical for a Marvel movie, funny with nice action scenes. Katherine thought the action scenes were a little too abstract sometimes though, which I might agree with. Not enough diversity with the characters / cast, especially considering that a large part of it was set in Asia. Overall pretty good. Watched with Katherine at the Cinemark University City movie theater. | 9.0 | Movie
13 | Hotel Transylvania | Funny and lighthearted, great movie to relax with. Had some very nice jokes. The plot was sometimes not super fleshed out, and was a little generic, but overall it was really fun watching this with Katherine! | 8.0 | Movie
12 | Gattaca | 9.0 | Movie | ||
11 | Batman vs Superman | Had some okay action scenes, but it felt like they were trying to do way too much in terms of different plot lines and didn't come through on any of them, leaving the viewer confused and without a nice sense of conclusion. | 6.0 | Movie
10 | The Lobster | Interesting movie about a hotel where you become an animal if you don't find a matching partner to be a couple with you, probably an artistic movie trying to say something about out society but I was on the plane and too tired to think so I found myself getting a little bored towards the end. | 5.0 | Movie
9 | Age of Adeline | Fun romantic comedy, with a few sketchy character actions and scenes (kind of sexist) but several times that I laughed out loud at a scene. It was fun to watch with Katherine overall! | 6.0 | Movie
8 | Zootopia | Another amazing animated movie. The characters were cute, the plots were well thought through and developed, and the meaning of the movie regarding racism, sexism, and one's place in society was very relevant and well done. Just a great movie, definitely worth rewatches! 5/2025 rewatched, still a great movie and enjoyed the twists, though didn't think it was quite as good as before (maybe didn't speak as much to me 10 years later). Changed from 10 to 9 which is still a great score! | 9.0 | Movie
7 | Lost in Thailand | Not the best movie, but I enjoyed watching it because it was with Katherine and their Chinese was very clear. The plot was a bit convoluted and I didn't feel like there were any particularly meaningful messages or incredibly funny scenes (although there were a few). I did like the part about one of the character's moms and the "健康树" he was trying to grow for her though – it got me a little teary eyed because I thought about my dad. | 5.0 | Movie
6 | Unfriended | A horror thriller type movie that takes place on one character's computer screen. I don't like scary movies, but it was fun watching this with people at the Phi Chi house when I randomly stopped by to drop off some homework. It was an interesting concept. Definitely some questionable storyline holes / character decisions though haha. I think it was mainly watching this with others that made it fun to watch. | 6.0 | Movie
5 | Deadpool | Super hyped movie, it was alright but definitely not my type of humor. A bit too crude and didn't have any real messages to take from it. | 5.0 | Movie
4 | The Jungle Book | Really a great movie, all plot lines wrapped up well, characters decently fleshed out, and just beautiful overall – the animals and scenery were really cute! Some funny jokes as well. | 9.0 | Movie
3 | Sleepless in Seattle | Nice movie starring young Tom Hanks, and I wanted to watch it after it was referenced in Finding Mr. Right. It dealt with the topic of living after the death of a loved one as well as a few other things, and was a fun watch. | 7.0 | Movie
2 | Paper Towns | Decent movie, fun to watch and was a nice coming of age story of a bunch of introverted high school friends. One thing I disliked was how it reminded me of my old home being TP'd that one time. | 7.0 | Movie
1 | 20 Once Again! | Solid movie that was a remake of a Korean movie, with an interesting premise of a 70 year old grandma becoming 20 years old again and trying to relive her dream of being a singer. Everything was great, it was funny but also poignant, just the end was extremely rushed and left something to be desired. Watched with Katherine on Valentine's Day 2016! | 8.0 | Movie |
